Use receipt during normal business hours, not the date the request was read. For arrival after hours or while the office is closed, confirm the effective next business-day receipt under applicable guidance. There is no universal 5 p.m. cutoff. This tool does not shift the date automatically.

Observed substitutes for weekend holidays

Choose the Friday before or Monday after only if the governmental body observes that date. There is no automatic substitute. Section 552.0031(e).

Additional dates properly designated under Section 552.0031(f)

An office closure alone does not qualify. The chief administrative officer or executive director must designate the date; for an independent school district, the board of trustees must do so. No more than 10 additional days may be designated per calendar year. Do not re-enter weekends or holidays already excluded above.

Prompt production remains required. A 10-business-day date is not permission to delay releasing public information.

Important limitations

This calculator provides a general planning estimate. It does not determine whether information is public, confidential, excepted from disclosure, subject to redaction, covered by a previous determination, or appropriate for an Attorney General ruling request.

Confirm effective receipt, delivery method, and normal business hours. The tool does not automatically shift weekend, holiday, or after-hours arrivals. Receipt is not the date someone reads the request.
Actual national and state holidays under Section 662.003(a)–(b) are mandatory exclusions. Optional holidays are excluded only when the public information officer observes them; a Friday or Monday substitute for a weekend holiday is excluded only when the governmental body observes it.
Additional Section 552.0031(f) dates require a proper designation and are limited to 10 per calendar year. A closure, remote-work day, or minimum-staffing day alone is not sufficient.
Clarification or narrowing, catastrophe suspensions, and vendor-held contracting information stop the calculation and require counsel review. The tool does not model special higher-education calendars under Section 552.0031(d), every delivery or withdrawal rule, deposit/bond deadlines, or other special regimes.
A qualifying cost estimate does not extend Subchapter G deadlines. Prompt production remains required; this estimate is not permission to wait 10 business days.
Dates before September 1, 2023 are outside the calculator’s scope. Later dates use the law reviewed below; verify amendments before relying on a future estimate.
